Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) represent a class of advanced materials characterized by spatial variations in composition, microstructure, and properties, enabling smooth transitions between different material behaviors. Additive Manufacturing (AM) has emerged as a powerful platform for fabricating FGMs due to its ability to control material distribution with high precision. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the design strategies, processing techniques, microstructural control, and applications of functionally graded metallic materials produced using AM. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between processing parameters and gradient formation, as well as the resulting mechanical, thermal, and functional properties. Key AM techniques such as Powder Bed Fusion and Directed Energy Deposition are analyzed in the context of gradient fabrication. The paper also discusses challenges such as material compatibility, residual stress, and process complexity. Emerging trends, including multi-material printing, computational design, and AI-driven optimization, are explored to highlight future directions. This review provides a detailed understanding of FGMs and their potential in advanced engineering applications.
