Overview

Acute BFR bench press effects on hemodynamics need clarification; leaves open implications for safety in resistance-trained men.

Structured PICO

Does low-intensity bench press with blood flow restriction alter hemodynamics and pulse wave reflection compared to high-intensity bench press and rest in resistance-trained men?

P
Population
16 resistance-trained men
I
Intervention
Low-intensity bench press with blood flow restriction (LI-BFR) utilizing 4 sets with repetitions of 30, 15, 15, and 15 at 30% 1-repetition maximum (1RM) and 30 seconds rest between sets
C
Comparator
Traditional high-intensity bench press without BFR (HI) consisting of 4 sets of 8 repetitions at 70% 1RM and 60 seconds rest between sets, and Control (CON) consisting of supine rest for 10 minutes
O
Outcome
Hemodynamics (heart rate, aortic and brachial blood pressure) and pulse wave reflection (augmentation index, augmentation pressure, wasted left ventricular energy) assessed before and after conditionssurrogate

Low-intensity bench press with blood flow restriction alters pulse wave reflection similarly to traditional high-intensity bench press, while significantly decreasing aortic and brachial diastolic blood pressure.
