A regional approach to estimating sediment damages in lakes and reservoirs indicated that 0.22% of the nation's water storage capacity is lost annually. Of this, an average of 24% is due to soil erosion on cropland. The greatest water storage capacity losses from deposited sediment originating on cropland occurred in the central United States. Annual national damages to storage capacity ranged from $597 million to $819 million, with cropland's contribution being $144 million to $197 million.
