Introduction: Transgender people are a vulnerable population experiencing increased marginalisation in the United Kingdom. Trans people’s occupational experiences of sports and physical activity have received limited attention. Our study aimed to explore the engagement of transgender individuals in those occupations.Methodology: Semi-structured 1:1 interviews were conducted with six participants. Data were analysed using the Listening Guide, which comprises three listenings.Findings: Demotivating factors centred on the hyper-gendered culture surrounding sports and physical activity, while the core motivations for trans people’s occupational engagement were social connection, finding joy, relaxation, and community building.Implications: Trans-affirming sports and physical activity has strong potential to improve well-being, connection with the body, and relationships. Occupational scientists could advocate for and explore trans-affirming sports and physical activity spaces as a holistic component of gender-affirming trans rights, enabling people to engage in what is meaningful to them.
