The paper highlights the integration of physiological systems in physical fatigue and suggests noninvasive techniques can predict task failure.
Intense exercise performed to exhaustion stresses numerous bodily systems and produces task failure. Although the locus of fatigue appears to be primarily myocellular, this does not minimize the importance of the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, and the endocrine system in supporting muscular power development. The pattern by which the systems interact have general similarity whether fatigue occurs after several minutes or several hours. Given that muscular and cardiovascular stress are continuously monitored by the brain, its efferent outputs reflect fatigue. Noninvasive techniques can be functionally applied to people during physical tasks to predict task failure.
