Demonstrates enhanced polarization beam splitter performance in ultraviolet applications, suggesting significant advancements in photonic technology.
On‐chip polarization beam splitters (PBSs) are essential for polarization‐sensitive applications. However, integrated PBSs operating in the Ultraviolet (UV) band have yet to be explored. This new operational band to integrated photonics introduces unique challenges for platform and device design. For instance, the short operating wavelength leads to weak birefringence of the material platform and increased sensitivity to structural dimensions. In this study, the first demonstration of UV‐band integrated PBSs is presented on an alumina‐on‐insulator platform, overcoming the challenges associated with this waveband. Measured at 375 nm, a directional coupler PBS (197 µm length) achieves an insertion loss (IL) < 1 dB and extinction ratio (ER) > 15 dB, while a multimode interferometer PBS (54 µm length) has an IL < 2 dB and ER > 9 dB. These UV‐band PBSs offer potential benefits for applications including trapped‐ion polarization‐gradient cooling, quantum emitter manipulation, and ultrahigh‐capacity communications.
