Does the administration of sulfonamide drugs produce interstitial myocarditis in mice and rats?
Sulfonamide drugs induce interstitial myocarditis in animal models, mirroring histological findings in humans.
Sulfonamide myocarditis in rodents mirrors human histology; leaves open clinical translation and requires prospective human studies.
In the mouse and rat an interstitial myocarditis, of which the cellular infiltration is in part eosinophilic, results from the intraperitoneal injection of neoprontosil and certain other drugs of the sulfonamide group. This myocarditis is histologically similar to that observed in the hearts of humans dying after the administration of these drugs.
