T HROUGHOUT the past two decades this nation has completed the major portion of a 42,500-mile system of interstate highways. The project is the most expensive public works program ever undertaken in this country. As such, scholars in government and universities have researched the impact upon the economy of local communities, regional travel patterns, and land development. One area of research has been the development problems in the areas around interchanges. This paper traces the major research findings concerning interchange development and reports the hypotheses and findings of a study of land use changes at interchanges along the Ohio Turnpike.
