Why the study?
HFpEF is a diverse syndrome associated with systemic inflammation and multiple comorbidities that may drive adverse myocardial remodeling by disrupting coronary endothelial and microvascular function.
Reviews mechanisms of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction in older adults, suggesting systemic inflammation drives myocardial remodeling and vascular dysfunction.
H eart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a diverse syndrome marked by myocyte hypertrophy, concentric left ventricular remodeling, and end-diastolic stiffness. 1HFpEF is seen predominantly in the elderly and hypertensive and is associated with several comorbidities such as obesity, anemia, diabetes mellitus, and lung and kidney disease. 2-4][7] This systemic inflammation may also cause adverse myocardial remodeling in HFpEF by disrupting coronary endothelial and microvascular function, inducing differentiation of myofibroblasts, and altering paracrine communication between cardiomyocytes. 8
