A mostly single icosahedral phase has been found to be formed by crystallization of an amorphous Al 75 Cu 15 V 10 alloy prepared by liquid quenching. The crystallization-induced icosahedral phase is concluded to be a highly stable intermediate product because it remains stable up to high temperatures just below melting temperature ( T m ) and changes to equilibrium Al 2 Cu and Al 3 V phases only after an annealing time of more than 30 h at 0.99 T m .
