Rigorous analytical design equations for general integrated compensated baluns (Marchand baluns) have been derived based on the mode parameters of the associated coupled strip sections. It is shown that a third-order balun is realizable with the use of two equal sections of coupled lines. Example components using planar as well as multilayer MMIC technology have been designed with the method presented here. Simulated results obtained by approximate TEM analysis as well as those generated with a 2.5D EM full-wave simulator show good broadband performance.
