Original educational board game teaches scientific concepts through strategic play, fostering creativity and understanding.
OmCouSol – The Shadow Race Against the Sun is an original strategic, abstract, experimental, and educational board game created by Doumbia Amara in Côte d’Ivoire, Africa. The game transforms the natural relationship between the Sun, time, light, and shadows into an interactive strategic experience. Designed for two players and recommended for ages 10 and above, OmCouSol combines strategic planning, spatial reasoning, observation, anticipation, logic, decision-making, and the symbolic representation of the apparent movement of the Sun. The central originality of the game lies in its ability to transform an everyday natural phenomenon into a playable and educational system. Players do not directly move the Sun. Instead, they interact with a system of movements, time positions, trees, and shadows through two complementary boards: the Modular Square Spiral 7, which serves as the strategic movement space, and the Solar Race Diagram, which represents the symbolic solar cycle. Educational and Pedagogical Dimension OmCouSol has a strong educational and pedagogical potential because it allows players to explore scientific and mathematical concepts through manipulation, observation, experimentation, and strategic decision-making rather than through theoretical explanation alone. Through gameplay, players can develop an intuitive understanding of concepts related to: the apparent movement of the Sun; the progression and organization of time throughout the day; the relationship between the position of the Sun and shadows; changes in shadow direction and length; spatial relationships and geometric representation; circular representation of time and solar cycles; observation of natural phenomena; logical reasoning and problem-solving. The game also develops transferable cognitive skills such as anticipation, strategic planning, concentration, spatial awareness, analysis, decision-making, adaptation, and understanding interactions within a complex system. Its learning approach is based on learning by doing. Players observe the consequences of their actions, test different strategies, analyze changing situations, and progressively construct their understanding of the represented system. In this way, the game can serve as a complementary educational tool for introducing or reinforcing concepts related to astronomy, Earth sciences, geometry, time, spatial reasoning, and scientific observation. OmCouSol may therefore be relevant not only to families and board-game enthusiasts, but also to schools, teachers, educational institutions, scientific workshops, cultural organizations, game clubs, and learning environments seeking innovative and interactive approaches to education. The project demonstrates how a board game can create a bridge between entertainment, scientific discovery, strategic thinking, and active learning. By turning a familiar natural phenomenon into a strategic challenge, OmCouSol encourages players to observe the world around them, formulate hypotheses, anticipate consequences, and learn through experience. Strategic and Innovative Dimension The game uses a controlled movement system rather than traditional dice-based progression. Players must analyze the values indicated on the board, choose their movements carefully, manage their pawns, reach strategic access points, and use shadows to influence the symbolic solar race. The interaction between the two boards creates a connection between physical movement and abstract representation. Actions performed in the strategic space can influence the solar system represented on the second board, requiring players to think several steps ahead and understand the consequences of their decisions. The game consequently combines: Strategy + Time + Light + Shadow + Spatial Reasoning + Scientific Observation + Education This combination gives OmCouSol a distinctive identity at the intersection of board gaming, educational design, scientific discovery, and strategic thinking. Project Status The project has reached an advanced conceptual stage, including a defined game system, an established official rulebook, a structured strategic mechanism, a thematic universe, a visual and symbolic identity, and development potential toward professional publication. Further development may include physical prototyping, graphic refinement, playtesting with different audiences, educational experimentation, balancing, and preparation for professional publication. The complete official rules and detailed technical mechanisms are available upon request to interested publishers, investors, manufacturers, distributors, educational organizations, and potential partners.
