Synthetic narrative review explores AI integration in Indian higher education, highlighting implications and policies.
The integration of AI, in higher education promises to reform knowledge creation, delivery of teachingand learning experiences, and the way research is produced and disseminated; similarly it also showsimpacts on assessment, institutional administrative functions and workforce education., AI is perceivedas a catalyst for institution re-imagination, redefining both ends and means of higher education. However,despite abundnat academic discussions conducted on various aspects of AI-powered higher education,from applications and Ed-Tech to ethics, governance and policy measures, to date, few have investigatedthese interrelated dynamics, with very little appearing in Indian-context literature. There has been littleattempt to explain how technology innovation, education policy, institutional readiness and pedagogyinteract to constitute AI in higher education.This paper provides a synthetic narrative review of the progressively impacting role of AI in the contextof higher education in India, analysing peer reviewed-journal articles, policy documents and governmentreportsas well as NGO/IGO reports to explore how AI affects patterns of learning and knowledgediscovery, addressing the emerging importance of generative AI on the higher education terrain, alongwith impacts across a scope of teaching-learning settings, research, institution governance and thegrooming of future workforce.This paper aims analyze major Indian policy responses from NEP 2020 and other government-drivendigitization initiatives, evaluating their function in enabling of an ethical and sensible integration of AI.
