Narrative review highlights decades of innovation in near-infrared spectroscopy, suggesting that portable hardware and artificial intelligence will drive future analytical applications.
Knowledge about the past will contribute to boost our understanding of the basis of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, as the technique continues to fertilise the development of novel applications. The last ten years have witnessed advances in instrumentation, software and the use of artificial intelligence. Developments in portable, miniature and handheld instruments provide new opportunities to collect NIR spectra in different environments. Furthermore, the contributions of hyperspectral imaging and the role of chemometrics in the development of the technology cannot be underestimated. This note discusses how science, history and the people behind the achievements of near infrared spectroscopy have contributed to its development.
