Randomized trial identifies archaeological sensitivity areas in New Jersey, suggesting the need for further investigations.
On behalf of the U.S. Army, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District contracted Hunter Research, Inc. to complete a Phase I archaeological survey of high and low archaeological sensitivity areas within undisturbed portions of Fort Dix, New Hanover and Pemberton Townships, Burlington and Manchester Township, Ocean County. This study was completed in accordance with Section 110 of NHPA. Completed in two Phases between June and December 1996 and in November 1997, Task Orders 1 and 2 field investigations included pedestrian reconnaissance and excavation of 3,352 shovel tests in 30 test blocks. Thirty (30) test blocks were placed within TACs 3B, 4, 5A, 5B, 5C, 5D, 5E, 5F and 6B. Each test block comprised a grid formed by 11 north/south transects and 11 east/west transects of 50-foot interval shovel tests. In TAC 3 the survey recovered a lithic flake, a pestle, and a prehistoric ceramic in Block 144, which was designated Locus 5. In TAC 4 no cultural material was recovered from subsurface testing. In TAC 5, the survey recovered isolated prehistoric lithics in one shovel test in Block 10, which was designated Locus 1, and in shovels tests in Block 14, which was designated Locus 2. In TAC 5, Block 130 the survey identified a prehistoric ceramic in one shovel test, which was designated Locus 4, as well as a stone foundation and scatter of historic artifacts. In TAC 5, Block 174 the survey identified two lithic flakes in one shovel test, which was designated Locus 6. In TAC 6 no cultural material was recovered from subsurface testing. The survey recommended Phase II archaeological investigations for prehistoric artifact concentrations in Blocks 10, 14, 130, 144, and 174. The survey recommended Phase II archaeological investigations for historic artifact concentrations in Blocks 7, 10, 14, 106, 130, 141, 144, and 145.
