Incomplete long-term recall of depression may bias retrospective prevalence estimates; leaves open accuracy of lifetime diagnostic surveys.
How accurately can patients recall a major depressive episode 25 years later?
Only about half of patients hospitalized for a major depressive episode can recall sufficient detail to satisfy diagnostic criteria 25 years later, suggesting lifetime rates in retrospective surveys may be underestimated.
