The interview situation is a significant element in the process for helping the black man utilize opportunities for growth. Therefore it is critical that the race variable be assessed as to the possible negative effects on the outcome of the interview situation. A review of the literature on the helping process suggests that there is a lack of rapport between a white helper and a black client. A direction for constructive action lies not in further analyzing the attitudes and experiences of the black man but rather in examining and modifying professional and lay programs as to their products. The implications of lay- counselor training for effective helping are considered.
