A semi‐empirical energy‐level diagram for octahedral, Nickel(II) Complexes

An energy diagram for Ni(II) in octahedral environment is constructed from spectral data of a large number of nickel complexes, with the aid of ligand‐field theory. These complexes are placed in a so‐called “Tanabe‐Sugano” series, according to increasing values of Dq/B. Two empirical relations are introduced. One relation between Dq/B and the shape of the second absorption band; and one relation between Dq/B and λ/B.
