Why the study?
Does the presence of life-threatening arrhythmias worsen clinical outcomes in patients with takotsubo syndrome?
Population
114 patients diagnosed with takotsubo syndrome (TTS) between 2003 and 2015 from an institutional database
Comparison
Presence of life-threatening arrhythmias vs Absence of life-threatening arrhythmias
Design
Cohort
Follow-up
3 years
Key result
The presence of life-threatening arrhythmias in takotsubo syndrome was associated with significantly higher rates of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (61.5% vs. 1%) and cardiogenic shock (53.8% vs. 14.8%).

LTA in TTS signals higher in-hospital risk; observational data leaves open whether targeted monitoring improves outcomes.

Does the presence of life-threatening arrhythmias worsen clinical outcomes in patients with takotsubo syndrome?
Absolute Event Rate: 61.5% vs 1%
Life-threatening arrhythmias in takotsubo syndrome are associated with severe acute in-hospital complications and higher in-hospital mortality, but do not appear to negatively impact long-term 3-year survival.
El‐Battrawy et al. (2017) conducted a cohort in Takotsubo syndrome (n=114). Presence of life-threatening arrhythmias (LTAs) vs. Absence of LTAs was evaluated on Cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The presence of life-threatening arrhythmias in takotsubo syndrome was associated with significantly higher rates of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (61.5% vs. 1%) and cardiogenic shock (53.8% vs. 14.8%).
