Luminescence due to plastic deformation of alkali halide crystals was studied. The structure of colour centres destroyed by moving dislocations has been identified. It is shown that dislocations destroy colour centres falling into the category of high stress obstacles (e.g. V2-centres), while F and F aggregate centres are not ionised during deformation of a crystal. The colour centre destruction is suggested to result from the stress-induced decrease in the activation energy of the centre thermal dissociation. Dissociation gives rise to mobile species and hence to electron-hole recombination.
