Population

n=39 consecutive patients with coronary artery disease undergoing elective off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) at Chiba University Hospital. Excluded: preoperative AF, chronic renal failure requiring hemodialysis, preoperative administration of steroids, and conversion to standard on-pump procedure.

Intervention

Measurement of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8) and CRP at multiple time points perioperatively

Outcome

Occurrence of postoperative atrial fibrillation (defined as characteristic arrhythmia lasting for ≥5 min and confirmed by 12-lead ECG) monitored until postoperative day 7

Elevated plasma levels of IL-6 immediately after off-pump CABG are significantly associated with the development of postoperative atrial fibrillation.
