Qualitative case study shows digital ecosystem impacts sustainability education in Kyrgyz universities, suggesting pathways for improvement.
This study investigates how digital ecosystem development in Kyrgyz higher education contributes to sustainability education and the preparation of future leaders. Although digital transformation in higher education has been widely studied, limited empirical evidence exists on how digital ecosystems function in resource-constrained contexts such as Central Asia. The study situates Kyrgyzstan within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). A qualitative case study approach was adopted using national policy documents, official statistics, and institutional reports from leading Kyrgyz universities. Thematic document analysis examined the development of key digital ecosystem components, including infrastructure, governance, and pedagogy. The analysis was guided by the Concept of Digital Transformation of the Kyrgyz Republic for 2024–2028 and informed by digital ecosystem and sustainability education frameworks. Digital ecosystem development remains uneven across institutions. Flagship universities demonstrate higher levels of digital integration, while regional and specialized institutions face persistent infrastructure and human capital constraints. Digital platforms improve access, transparency, and international collaboration, but their effectiveness depends on institutional capacity and alignment with national policy. The findings indicate that inclusive and well-coordinated digital ecosystems can strengthen sustainability competencies and leadership development. This study provides one of the first empirical analyses of digital ecosystem development in Central Asian higher education. It demonstrates how resource-constrained countries can leverage digital transformation to advance sustainability education and offers policy-relevant insights for building resilient, inclusive, and digitally connected higher education systems.
