Position paper outlines a framework for BCI development emphasizing modular architectures and cognitive integration.
This repository contains V8 of the CAA-X (Cognitive Atom Architecture eXtension) research program, subtitled "CAA-X-B: A Research Agenda for Modular Brain-Computer Interface Architectures — From Cognitive Atoms to Bio-Digital Protocols." V8 is a research agenda and position paper, not a completed empirical study. It extends the CAA-X framework to the domain of brain-computer interfaces (BCI), proposing five testable hypotheses and formalizing four intuitive future scenarios into precise mathematical objects and protocol specifications. The core claim is conditional: if human-AI cognitive fusion is achievable by 2035, then a modular, geometric, protocol-layer architecture of the form described herein is the most natural theoretical bridge. Core ThesisThe BCI field excels at end-to-end signal decoding but lacks a middle-layer theory explaining why certain neural patterns generalize across subjects, how multi-turn intent decoding maintains consistency, what framework should govern LLM-BCI integration, and how to quantify decoding confidence. CAA-X-B proposes that the answer lies not in larger models or more electrodes, but in architectural principles: modularity (cognitive atoms), geometric representation (cognitive manifolds), and protocol-layer standardization (GWP-B). Five Testable Hypotheses1. H1 — Cognitive Atom Hypothesis: Neural signals underlying motor imagery decompose into sparse, functionally specific activation patterns more consistent across subjects than raw channel-level features.2. H2 — CML 2.0-B as Layered Translation: BCI decoding decomposes into three interpretable layers (Latin-B, Ideographic-B, Intentional-B), each providing error-detection checkpoints.3. H3 — GWP-B Inhibition Gate Efficacy: A global workspace protocol with explicit inhibition improves multi-class decoding by suppressing competing representations.4. H4 — Neural Signal Manifold Hypothesis: Neural signals from multiple subjects embed into a common geometric space where MI classes form separable regions, and cross-subject generalization corresponds to manifold alignment.5. H5 — λ-B as Metacognitive Calibration Heuristic: A composite scalar λ_B, computed from neural signal properties and decoder confidence, indicates real-time decoding reliability. Four Formalized Future Scenarios- Intent Short-Circuit (IS-C): Direct isometry between biological and AI intention manifolds, bypassing language mediation.- Latent Space Docking (CMI): Diffeomorphic alignment of cognitive manifolds between two agents for continuous vector communication.- Direct Image Transfer (CMAR): Cross-modal atom resonance enabling thought-to-image transmission via shared manifold coordinates.- AI as the Sixth Sense: Critical coupling threshold (λ_B^crit = 0.95) marking the phase transition from tool to pre-attentive cognitive extension. Key Theoretical Constructs- Cross-Substrate Manifold: A manifold M is cross-substrate if biological and digital embeddings overlap in atom-representable regions.- Modality-Agnosticism Axiom: Cognitive atom activation factorizes into substrate-independent manifold embedding Φ and atom-specific function g_i.- GWP-B 2.0 Protocol: Four message types (ISC, MC, CMR, SC) for bio-digital communication.- Bio-Digital Coupling Coefficient (λ-B): Order parameter for the tool-to-sense phase transition with operational component thresholds. Validation ProtocolAll proposed experiments use BCI Competition IV Dataset 2a (public, no IRB required). Four-stage validation: atom detection (SAE + spectral clustering), manifold alignment (UMAP + Procrustes + persistent homology), λ-B strategy comparison (EEGNet + temperature scaling), and inhibition gate efficacy (cue+IG vs. baseline). Each hypothesis has explicit falsification criteria. Honest Limitations- No invasive validation; hypotheses may fail for single-unit recordings.- No biological proof; even if H1–H5 hold on EEG, this does not imply the brain "uses" cognitive atoms.- Manifolds, λ_B, and CML layers are modeling tools, not discovered laws.- The 2035 roadmap is a conceptual projection, not a business plan.- All "theorems" herein are formalized hypotheses; all "predictions" are invitations to refutation. Relationship to Prior VersionsV0–V7 established the general CAA-X framework for artificial cognition. V8 is the bio-digital bridge. It translates cognitive atoms into neural atoms, GWP into GWP-B, and cognitive manifolds into cross-substrate manifolds. It is explicitly conditional: it does not assert that human-AI fusion is inevitable, only that if it is achievable, a modular geometric protocol architecture is the most natural path.
