To assess the prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae and identify the underlying resistance genes among clinical isolates.
Analyzed 1602 clinical samples submitted over two months (June–July 2014) to microbiology laboratories across three major hospitals in Burkina Faso.
Identified bacterial isolates using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and assessed antimicrobial susceptibility via disk diffusion on Mueller-Hinton agar.

Resistance enzymes were identified primarily in Escherichia coli (67.5%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (26%), with the CTX-M-1 group (specifically CTX-M-15) comprising 94% of all detected beta-lactamases.
Phylogenetic profiling of 202 E. coli isolates revealed eight distinct clades including 22 ST131 strains, showing no single lineage exclusively linked to enzyme production.
