Why the study?
Differences exist among individual beta-blockers that can affect therapeutic efficacy and adverse effects, necessitating careful selection of highly beta-1-selective agents with favorable pharmacokinetics.
This narrative review highlights the continued clinical relevance of beta blockers in cardiovascular medicine, emphasizing the pharmacokinetic, metabolic, and efficacy advantages of highly beta-1 selective agents like bisoprolol across hypertension, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, and heart failure.
May support cardioselective beta blocker preference in practice; leaves open head-to-head trials versus less selective agents.
Current clinical practice continues to regard beta blockers as very important drugs in a number of indications. What should be taken into account, however, is that individual beta blockers vary and that the differences between them may infl uence the overall treatment effect or side effects. In choosing the appropriate beta blockers, we should focus on the beta-1 selective agents which have good pharmacokinetic properties and whose effi cacy has been proved by a whole range of clinical trials.
