Overview

Association of ANGPTL4/8 with T2D dyslipidemia is hypothesis-generating; should not yet change clinical management.

Structured PICO

P
Population
235 subjects (144 non-diabetics and 91 T2D) recruited at Dasman Diabetes Institute in Kuwait. Non-diabetics included 82 non-obese and 62 obese; T2D included 27 non-obese and 64 obese. Excluded morbidly obese (BMI >40 kg/m2) and subjects with prior major illness or taking medications influencing body composition.
O
Outcome
Plasma levels of ANGPTL3, 4, and 8 measured by ELISA, and gene expression in adipose tissue measured by real-time RT-PCRsurrogate

Plasma levels of ANGPTL3, 4, and 8 are significantly elevated in obesity and type 2 diabetes, suggesting a role in the dyslipidemia associated with these metabolic conditions.

Limitations

  • Cross-sectional design does not allow establishing biological role in development of diabetes
  • Use of gene expression data from adipose tissue instead of protein expression due to scarcity of tissue
