Aerobic exercise may confer longer anxiolytic effects than relaxation or rest in untrained males; leaves open generalizability and clinical adoption pending higher-level trials.
Does acute physical activity or relaxation improve state anxiety and blood lactate in untrained college males?
Aerobic exercise, autogenic relaxation, and quiet rest all provide anxiolytic effects, but the effect persists longer following aerobic exercise, independent of blood lactate accumulation.
Koltyn et al. (1997) studied this question.
