Experimental study demonstrates safe synthesis of 2-quinolones via Ir(III)-catalyzed carbonylation using ex situ carbon monoxide, highlighting applications in bioactive molecule design.
Herein, we describe a novel method for the synthesis of 2-quinolones through Ir(III)-catalyzed carbonylative cyclization of 2-alkenyl anilines. The use of Mo(CO)6 as a CO surrogate, together with a two-chamber reactor system, enables safe and efficient access to these compounds. Experimental and computational mechanistic investigations guided the rational development of this transformation. The synthetic potential of this method is further demonstrated by the synthesis of bioactive compounds.
