It is required in coastal projects that beaches are not only protected by structures such as groins and offshore breakwaters, but also nourished artificially. Amanohashidate Beach forms sand spit. In order to prevent erosion and make a stable beach, the application of sand bypassing is examined by Ministry of Transport and Kyoto Prefectural Government. A series of surveys and studies on sand drift and wave conditions were conducted in order to examine the sand drift mechanism, the possibility of applying sand bypassing and its executive way at Amanohashidate Beach. Results were obtained on the sediment source, the volume and the predominant direction of sand transport and the correlation between longshore sand transport volume and wave conditions. On the basis of these results, the executive way was considered to apply sand bypassing to this beach.
