DURING the process of respiration in the cell two different types of activation by catalysts have been described. On the one hand organic molecules are rendered more susceptible to oxidation, and on the other oxidising substances more prone to reduction. The first type of activation commonly leads to dehydrogenation in Wieland's sense, and is carried out by dehydrogenases. The activation of oxygen has been particularly stressed by Warburg [1926].
