Vago-sympathetic imbalance plays a critical role in the initiation of ventricular fibrillation, and spontaneous termination is dependent on age and autonomic tone.
Premature for human VF application; animal data leaves open translational relevance of autonomic imbalance.
ENTRICULAR fibrillation (VF) is generally accepted as a likely cause of sudden death in the population at large. In general, it requires artificial electrical defibrillation; however, in some patients VF terminates spontaneously.1)-4) The factors which determine both the genesis of VF and the spontaneous return to sinus rhythm are not clearly understood.3),5),6) The onset of VF is related to factors that produce a lack of homogeneity in ventricular activity, recovery and ventricular refractoriness.3),7) The prerequisites for spontaneous termination of VF probably are: reorganization of the electrocardiogram,3) homogeneity of ventricular activation8) and shortening of repolarization time so as to provide less opportunity for reentry and/or prevent the state of asynchronous depolarization.5)
