In contrast to the original immune serum globulin preparations, which could be given safely only by intramuscular injection, modern formulations of IgG may be given intravenously, allowing for dose escalation up to 10 times the dose tolerated by intramuscular route. The ability to deliver such massive amounts of antibody rapidly and repeatedly has prompted investigations of new clinical uses of immunoglobulin preparations, including new uses as anti-infective agents.
