Implication

No endothelial difference by activity level; leaves open mechanisms for BP and stroke benefits and requires prospective studies.

Structured PICO

Is physical activity associated with indices of endothelial function and angiogenesis in patients with hypertension?

P
Population
234 patients with hypertension (198 males; mean age 64 years; mean blood pressure 166/90 mmHg) and 60 age and sex-matched healthy normotensive controls.
I
Intervention
Physical activity assessed by the Baecke physical activity questionnaire
C
Comparator
Low physical activity (within hypertensive group) and healthy normotensive controls
O
Outcome
Indices of endothelial damage/dysfunction (flow-mediated dilatation [FMD] of the brachial artery and von Willebrand factor [vWf]) and angiogenesis (plasma vascular endothelial growth factor [VEGF] and its soluble receptor [sFlt-1])surrogate

Physical activity levels in hypertensive patients do not appear to correlate with indices of endothelial damage or angiogenesis, despite being associated with lower diastolic blood pressure and stroke risk.
