Implication

May support DDI as durable long-term mode with manageable issues; leaves open randomized comparisons in sinus node dysfunction.

Structured PICO

What are the long-term outcomes and device-related expectations of DDI pacing in patients requiring dual chamber pacing?

P
Population
65 patients selected for dual chamber pacing with indications of sick sinus syndrome (n=52) or combined sinus node dysfunction and AV block (n=13). 42 patients had a history of paroxysmal atrial arrhythmias.
I
Intervention
DDI mode of pacing using Pacesetter 283 or 285 pulse generators with passive fixation atrial and ventricular leads
O
Outcome
Pacing mode retention and device-related pacing issues (such as functional undersensing and effective VVI pacing) during follow-up

DDI pacing is a viable and stable long-term pacing mode for patients with sinus node dysfunction and paroxysmal atrial arrhythmias, with most device-related sensing issues being manageable via reprogramming.
