The main aspects of the problem of long wavelength x-ray spectrometry and detection are considered, and it is concluded that a proportional counter and pulse analysis system is the best approach for practical light element ( Z < 12) scanning microanalysis. A suitable pulse analysis method, in which several pulse analyser outputs are treated as a set of linear equations which can be solved in a network, has been developed. The method and its incorporation into a scanning microanalyser are described. Several x-ray images showing the elements Be, C and O demonstrate the performance of the instrument.
