Does circulatory support via a bloodless-prime pump-oxygenator restore circulation in dogs with experimentally induced ventricular fibrillation or acute left heart failure?
Circulatory support using a bloodless-prime pump-oxygenator successfully restored circulation in the majority of dogs with experimentally induced ventricular fibrillation or acute left heart failure.
Hypothesis-generating for bloodless circulatory support in experimental VF or failure; leaves open human translation.
Sixteen cases of intractable ventricular fibrillation and four cases of acute left heart failure were produced in 20 dogs by coronary artery ligation. Circulatory support via peripheral cannulation, using a bloodless-prime pump-oxygenator, enabled 15 animals to regain control of their circulation. Factors involved in support during myocardial ischaemia are discussed.
