X-ray induced luminescence, dark conductivity and fundamental absorption of LiNbO3 containing between 0 and 9% Mg show marked changes near 4% Mg. These features can consistently be explained as due to changes in the electron-lattice coupling for higher Mg concentrations. This is supported by the behavior of below bandgap absorption and lattice frequencies when the Mg concentration increases. A microscopic model explaining these effects is discussed.
