Direct experimental evidence is presented concerning the transformation of SnTe. This transformation is proved to be cubic to orthorhombic. The transformation temperature is found to depend on the stoichiometry of this compound, in a way similar to that observed in the isomorphous GeTe, i.e. the transformation temperature increases together with the Te content. The cell parameters of the low temperature modification differ slightly, the difference lying in the second decimal point even at very low temperatures e.g. 16 °K.
