A new compound MnNi 2 O 4 has been synthesised and is found to crystallise in cubic spinel structure with a=8.38 AA. The K absorption discontinuity of manganese shows that it is in its quadrivalent state. The intensity calculations show that Mn 4+ ions go to the tetrahedral sites. The observed cubic symmetry is explained on the basis of the low-spin state of Mn 4+ . The compound is an n-type semiconductor.
