Group delay in multimode optical fibers

Abstract

The group delay τ in multimode fibers was previously derived by Gloge and Marcatili under the assumption that τ be dependent on the propagation constant β only. This letter derives the group delay without the above assumption and clarifies when the approach used by Gloge and Marcatili fails.
