The IUFM has been founded as a common culture resource centre for all teachers in order to contribute to the building of a dynamic identity liable to reply to the requirements of schools. The ENNA (Ecoles Normales Nationales d'Apprentissage) which used to train teachers for vocational teaching, have been contributing to this unification process and consequently had to merge with IUFM. From a survey carried out in 1997, on the premises of the former ENNA in Nantes, this article analyses how the training of vocational teachers was reorganised locally. By describing the state of a process at a given period of time, it highlights the reluctancy to abandon a former common identity ; the lack of symbolically strong structuring principles does not allow this institution, which used to be friendly, full or collective works, hold in esteem by the National Educational Authority, to find its own place and contribute to the rebuilding of a collective and dynamic identity within the IUFM. The juxtaposition of unfocused identities leads to the question of the model in progress and its possible evolutions.
