Pedagogical review demonstrates strategies for integrating STEM learning into physical education, suggesting enhanced multidisciplinary engagement for students.
In an ever-changing world, it is more important than ever that today’s youth are prepared with knowledge and skills to solve problems, make sense of information, and distinguish how to gather and evaluate evidence to make decisions. These are the kinds of skills that students develop in science, technology, engineering, and math—disciplines collectively known as STEM. STEM education is a strategic priority in many schools, however it suffers from something of an image and engagement problem, particularly among students who might not be a natural fit for solo, technology-heavy activities, like coding and numbers. Enhancing STEM education by using fitness, health, and physical activity can facilitate student learning across multidisciplinary areas. This article provides practical strategies on how to use STEM activities during prescribed physical activity as a vehicle for student engagement. Principles and strategies for integrating STEM into physical education are provided, along with suggested activities.
