A new isoquinoline alkaloid, jamtine-N-oxide has been isolated from Cocculus hirsutus.I t s s t r u c t u r e has been assigned as C20H25N05 (1) on the basis of spectral --1 studies.Its stereochemistry has been determined by homonuclear 2D H-NMR (COSY-45, J-resolved, NOESY) and l 3 c -~M I 3 assignments made by GASPE experiments.Cocculus h -(Syn: C.villosus) UC (Menispermaceae), locally celled Jamti-ki-bel, i s a climbing s h r u b and is commonly found in Karachi, Sind and Kutch.Its various parts a r e highly reputed f o r their medicinal properties in the indigenous system of m e d i ~i n e l -~.Earlier investigations a n various parts of this plant led t o the isolation of trilabine, isotrilobine, coclaurine, magnoflorine and s i t o s t e r o ~~-~.A s a result of our continuing investigations on leaves of Cocculus h = , we nave isolated a new alkaloid, to which s t r u c t u r e (1) has been assigned on the basis of extensive
