Recent experimental developments in time-resolved, spectroscopic measurements under shock loading are outlined. Results from a comprehensive investigation on shocked liquid CS, are described to demonstrate how continuum and spectroscopic measurements may be combined to gain an understanding of shock induced chemical reactions in condensed materials. The potential difficulties in using spectroscopicmethods are indicated and directions for future work are suggested.
