Literature review reveals critical cybersecurity vulnerabilities in digital healthcare systems, highlighting zero-trust architectures and artificial intelligence as vital defenses.
Healthcare organisations worldwide are experiencing unprecedented digital transformation, fundamentally revolutionising patient care delivery and data management processes. However, this technological advancement has simultaneously introduced substantial cybersecurity vulnerabilities that jeopardise patient confidentiality, data authenticity, and healthcare infrastructure stability, creating critical challenges for maintaining secure digital healthcare environments globally. This review examines cybersecurity's evolving significance within healthcare environments by analysing contemporary challenges, technological innovations, and emerging protective strategies to provide actionable recommendations for enhancing healthcare cybersecurity resilience. A comprehensive literature analysis was conducted across multiple databases including PubMed, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, focusing on English-language publications from the preceding decade. The systematic search strategy utilised targeted keywords related to healthcare cybersecurity, medical system threats, and implementation strategies. Healthcare cybersecurity faces critical obstacles including antiquated system architectures, insufficient funding allocation, internal security threats, and increasingly sophisticated regulatory frameworks. High-profile incidents including major data breaches and ransomware attacks demonstrate severe vulnerability consequences. Conversely, proactive approaches implemented by leading healthcare institutions showcase effective strategies including zero-trust frameworks, comprehensive risk evaluation, and workforce education programmes. Revolutionary technologies such as artificial intelligence applications, distributed ledger systems, and secure cloud infrastructures present promising solutions for addressing contemporary threats. Robust cybersecurity frameworks are fundamental for maintaining secure, efficient digital healthcare ecosystems. Through strategic investment in protective infrastructure and fostering cross-sector partnerships, healthcare institutions can effectively minimise risks, protect sensitive information, and ensure uninterrupted care delivery within increasingly interconnected environments.
