Does anaesthesia outside the operating room increase the risk of complications compared to anaesthesia inside the operating room?
Does anaesthesia outside the operating room increase the risk of complications compared to anaesthesia inside the operating room?
Anaesthesia outside the operating room carries a higher risk of complications than inside the operating room, highlighting an urgent need for better data and monitoring.
Non-OR anaesthesia may confer higher complication risk, especially in children with inadequate monitoring; leaves open need for prospective studies and protocol standardization.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To evaluate the risks and safety of anaesthesia performed outside the operating room. RECENT FINDINGS: Very little information and hard data are available. However, paediatric patients are often involved in complications, substandard care is often prominent and inadequate monitoring is often a contributory factor. The risk of complications is higher with nonoperating room anaesthesia than with anaesthesia inside the operating room. SUMMARY: There is an urgent need for good data on complications with anaesthesia outside the operating room.
