After photolysis and excitation with synchrotron radiation of a neon matrix doped with Xe and D 2 , two new emission bands show up besides the well-known Xe and Xe 2 emissions. In analogy to the xenon-halides, these emissions are attributed to XeD and Xe 2 D. Excitation spectra of these emissions show that the excimers can be directly excited or formed by excitation of Xe, Xe 2 and possibly deuterium excited states. The direct excitation and emission of XeD is assigned to transitions between the van der Waals ground state and the lowest ionic Xe + D - state.
