It has been demonstrated that the wave number band accessible to a pattern-forming system collapses to a single wave number, if the control parameter R varies slowly in space from supercritical to subcritical. Supplementing that analysis, the present study shows that not to close to threshold nonadiabatic effects, which lead to deviations from this perfect selection, are predominantly due to localized regions with rapidly varying R , which are present in usual realistic situations ( e.g. discontinuities in the slope of R ). The remaining wave number bands are calculated directly from the basic equations and agree quantitatively with numerical simulations.
