Why the study?
Does protamine reversal of heparin alter blood platelet-activating factor (PAF) levels in patients undergoing CABG?
Population
10 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG)
Comparison
Protamine reversal of heparin vs Baseline (before protamine reversal)
Design
Cohort
Follow-up
Immediate post-infusion (during surgery)

Protamine-associated regional PAF shifts in CABG are hypothesis-generating; leaves open any mechanistic role and should not change reversal practice.
Does protamine reversal of heparin alter blood platelet-activating factor (PAF) levels in patients undergoing CABG?
Protamine infusion during CABG alters regional PAF levels, increasing in the left atrium and decreasing in the pulmonary and radial arteries, but PAF does not appear to mediate heparin-protamine-induced thrombocytopenia.
