Numerical studies of variable-range hopping in finite one-dimensional systems show large variations in the resistance as a function of chemical potential. This may explain recently observed structures in resistance versus gate voltage in narrow metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors. Our explanation suggests the possibility of probing a particular pair of localized states.
